Growing To Become the Husband God Wants You To Be (Part 2)

Post written by Raymund Tamayo

Writer's note: This is the continuation of my previous blog post, "Growing To Become the Husband God Wants You To Be (Part 1)" aimed to share some basic biblical knowledge to my fellow young husbands and/or husbands to be.

According to the Bible, God has at least three purposes for marriage:

1. God aims marriage to be our primary human relationship
"And Adam said: 'This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.' Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh." - Genesis 2:23-24
To become the husband God wants us to be, we have to be careful in developing our relationship with our wives over that with any other human being. Which is why getting married is not a shallow and thoughtless decision to make.

For those who are still singles who are planning on building your own family, really praying and asking God who is the right woman for you is extremely important if you want to have a blessed future.

2. God aims marriage to be a permanent relationship on earth
"So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate." - Matthew 19:6
This is clear is both partners are believers. But if not, it gets a little bit complicated.

From the standpoint of the believing partner, God's Word says that He allows the believer to accept the rebelling partner's decision to call off the relationship if:

  • the unbelieving partner wants a divorce or had abandoned the believing spouse without no intention to return (1 Corinthians 7:15-17), or
  • in the case of sexual unfaithfulness (Matthew 19:9)

However, to be clear: God never ordained or created the idea of divorce, only man did.

3. God aims marriage to be a perfecting relationship, in which both partners improve on their relationship with God and with each other at the same time
"For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope." - Jeremiah 29:11
God loves us so much that He doesn't want us to become stagnant in our personal growth. He wants us to improve and grow as a person in all areas of our lives. Thus, He will surely use our most important relationship on earth to help us mature in His likeness.

The greatest potential for self-denial and obedience to the relationship principles of God is by being in a divine covenant relationship of marriage.

A Husband's Authority is "Delegated" Authority

As husbands, we should be humble enough to realize that our authority over our wives and families are "delegated", meaning they come from God.

This authority is not for our own selfish benefits and ambitions, but should be carried out lovingly as Christ loves the church.

Both man and woman are created in the image of God and no gender is above or better than the other. God loves us all no more or less.

It is just that in God's design, He wants us, the husbands, to lead our families while our wives submit to our leadership, which is under God's guidance.

This design of a family glorifies God here on earth.

Since the goal of true believers is to glorify God above all else, then both husband and wife should happily and whole-heartedly accept these God-ordained roles for each other, asking for his grace, strength, mercy, and favor every step of the way.
