4 Basic Ways to Stay Spiritually Healthy

Post written by Raymund and Denielle Tamayo

There are a lot of resources, both online and in traditional media, talking about spiritual health. And with so many on the buffet table, sometimes one can’t help but become confused.

Here, we will attempt to discuss spiritual health in the simplest way that can easily be understood by anyone. And may we also remind our readers that what we will talk about here is Christian spirituality. So if you are not a Christian, feel free not to finish this entire post.

While physical health is a priority in our family, more than that is our spiritual health. Recently, our family had a battle with sickness as all four of us (us and our two children Ryah and Rafa) succumbed to flu. Without a strong spiritual health, our family would have been affected so much more.

We should always remember that we are spiritual beings. Our essence comprises three parts: the body, the soul, and the spirit. For a balanced, happy, strong, and fulfilled life, it is important that we keep our whole being healthy.

What is Spiritual Health?

Let us first define what spiritual health is.

Spiritual health is the depth of one’s spirituality. In easier words, it is how intimate our relationship with God is. It should be noted that a healthy spiritual life is essential for our overall well-being.

When we are spiritually “unhealthy,” we feel lost and insecure. We tend to become discontent about life, self-centered, and distant from our loved ones. Not only are our relationships affected, but also our physical health and our life perspective.

According to the Bible, spiritual health should be regarded more than physical health (1 Timothy 4:7-8). Even so, it is surprising that we sometimes give more emphasis on staying healthy physically than spiritually.

4 Basic Ways to Stay Spiritually Healthy

Now that we have a better understanding of what spiritual health is, here are the four basic ways to stay spiritually healthy:

  1. Pray. Praying is talking to our Heavenly Father. This is the time to thank and praise Him, ask our needs, and rant (yes, including that) about our life. This is our upward communication (man to God) to God. As in any relationship, communication is very important for it to stay healthy.
  1. Read God’s Word. Although there are many ways which God speaks to us, He does it primarily through His written Word, the Bible. The Bible is a set of books written by ordinary men of history but whose writings are God-breathed (inspired by God). Read 2 Timothy 3:16. This is the downward communication (God to man) from God.
  1. Fellowship with other believers. Being with people who has the same faith and beliefs as ours builds us up and strengthens us spiritually. Proverbs 27:17 says that “as iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” There is a saying that “no man is an island.” That’s true. Let us tell it in a different way, “no Christian is an island.” We are at least an archipelago, not independent or dependent, but interdependent to each other.
  1. Testify and share your faith to others. In words and in deeds. It’s not enough to just tell others, we must also show others. When our lifestyle doesn’t reflect what we are saying, then we call that hypocrisy. It’s also not enough to show others, we also have to tell others. Because how can others know about Christ when nobody tells them?
figure 1

As you can see in figure 1, the Christian life is compared to a wheel with four spokes. Everything should be present for it to be balanced. When one spoke is missing the wheel will crumble.

It’s the same with our spiritual health. As followers of Christ, we must do all these four basic things regularly to have a balanced Christian life and stay spiritually healthy.

We hope you are enlightened and blessed by this discussion. Feel free to ask us any questions on the comments.

Blessings!
