Principles of responsibility, discipline, and independence are some of the things we wish to teach our children. Some of us even attempt to live these philosophies in our own life.
Make
no mistake about it, being responsible, self-controlled, and self-reliant are
good.
The
inherent danger, however, is if, or when, our outlook comes to the point when
we trust more in ourselves than in God.
This
outlook creates two hazards that can both lead to spiritual decay.
The
first one is arrogance. Pride becomes unhealthy when everything is going great
in our lives, and we become convinced that nothing wrong can happen in our
world.
The
second is depression. It works itself in our hearts when we meet the unavoidable
challenges of life – sickness, financial problems, a broken relationship.
What
happens when something occurs out of your control and you’re the one seriously affected?
What would you do? What can you do?
The
answer is to trust God daily – acknowledging that He is the Source of all good
gifts and successes (keeps us grounded), and our Safe Refuge when times are
hard (builds us up).
When
we put our complete confidence in Him, He is faithful to direct our steps in
all the circumstances of our lives.
“Trust the Lord with all your
heart, and don’t depend on your own understanding. Remember the Lord in all you
do, and He will give you success.” – Proverbs 3:5-6
