One Sunday each summer in
the Philippines, we remember that Jesus Christ was raised from the dead more
than two thousand years ago.
Personally, I would say that real faithful children of God should
remember and recognize this as often as they can.
But I’m still thankful that at least once a year, Filipinos take some
time to reflect upon our Savior’s resurrection.
As true believers of Christ, we should be both willing and ready to
explain this wonderful event to our friends should they inquire us.
The resurrection of Jesus Christ is the foundation of Christianity, and
without it our faith would be a joke and we would be all wasting our time.
But the truth is, the event of Jesus’ resurrection is incontestable.
Professor Thomas Arnold of Rugby, a world-renowned historian, once said that
Christ’s resurrection from the dead is the “best-attested fact in human history.”
Christ's resurrection was also recorded by Josephus, the Jewish
historian, in his Antiquities. Josephus was a Jew writing to
satisfy the Romans, so his report of Christ's resurrection wouldn't have
pleased the Romans at all. He would not have included it had he not believed it
to be true.
With that in mind, the question is why is Christ’s resurrection so
important? Here are some reasons according to the Word of God.
- It proves that Jesus Christ really is the Son of God. The apostle Paul confirmed that Christ “was appointed the Son of God in power by his resurrection from the dead” (Romans 1:4).
- It assures us that we have forgiveness from our sins. The apostle Paul again said that “if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins” (1 Corinthians 15:17).
- It tells the world that the Kingdom of God is ruled by someone who is alive, not dead. Jesus Christ is the only spiritual leader in the history of mankind who ever claimed to rise from the dead, and fulfilled it. No one else did. Jesus Christ – sixty years after His death – appeared to the apostle John in the island of Patmos and said “Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. I am the Living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive for ever and ever!” (Revelation 1:17-18)
- It verifies that physical death is not the end of human existence. God, who is the giver of life (1 Timothy 6:13), has the power to revive life to a human body. Christ’s triumph over the grave is heaven’s promise to us that we too shall be raised when the day of the Lord comes! That is why Christ is referred to in 1 Corinthians 15:20 as “the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.”
- It indicates the ultimate victory of
Christ and His followers over all its enemies. In
the book of Revelation, Jesus is depicted as a lamb that had been slain,
but was standing again (5:6). This same Lord was “the lion of the tribe of
Judah” that had overcome his foes (5:5). Christians too will overcome as a
result of the Lamb’s sacrifice and victory over death (Revelation 12:11).
Tomorrow we will celebrate Easter. The time of the year when we
celebrate the resurrection of the Savior of the world.
The One who was rejected by men…
The One who came from heaven to earth to show us the way to the Father…
The One who gave His life as a ransom for your sins and mine…
The One who is now in heaven preparing a place for His faithful followers…
The One who is coming again to take us to be with Him in glory forever!
Hallelujah to the King of kings and the Lord of lords!
Hallelujah for Jesus is alive!
