Be
still.
For a
moment.
Feel
your breath coming in and going out. Listen to your thoughts.
Nature
does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished. Have you realized that?
In this
modern world where activity and busyness are the default modes, it seems
contradictory. People try to cram as much into every minute of the day as
possible. When we are not busy, it seems as if we’re unproductive and lazy.
Other
people even compete by trying to show others how busy they are. They walk
around fast holding a bunch of documents, and looking terrified and confused,
as if the files they are holding meant the world.
Someone
had 100 things on his to-do list… is that it? I have 200! The winner is the
person who has the most insane schedule, who rushes from one activity to the
next, tired, drained, confused, and out of focus. It’s as if that means he’s
the most successful and important.
When
we’re constantly rushing, we will miss out life itself. Rushing around is
counterproductive. You can run around crazily, but still get nothing done. Or
you can get a lot done – but nothing important.
Take a
moment to think about how you spend your days. Are you always in a hurry? Are
you always trying to get things done like a machine? Is this how you want to
spend your life?
If so,
peace be with you. If not, take a moment to be still. Don’t think about what
you have to do, or what you’ve done already. Just stay still and be in the
moment.
Then
after a few seconds, contemplate your life, thank God for the air you’re
breathing. Thank God for the life He gave you. Thank God for the loved ones He
trusted under your care. See life with more thankfulness, more contemplation,
more peace.
We have
been conditioned that the busier the better. But I don’t buy that. The speed of
doing something is not as important as what we focus on doing. You can do fewer
things than others --- but with much more impact.
